We may not really celebrate Christmas at my house, but I love simple holiday decor and the joy of decorating the house to be special and warm during the holidays.
While growing up, my family and friends always decorated trees, we gave each other gifts and made Christmas time a celebration just because everyone else around us did it too.
Over the years, we stopped wanting to put up the huge tree and started just having minimal decor elements throughout the house just for some holiday spirit and to bring color into an otherwise kind of cold and grey time of year.
Here are some quick tips on how to make your home decorated and festive while still staying minimal and on a budget.
1. Pick a focal point! I focused on styling this console table we have against one wall of our room but others may pick a mantel to decorate or the area under a TV. This boat is a piece that my dad loves and is in the center of our table and the bright red color brings in the holiday *vibes.*
2. Use the rule of threes! I learned about this in a design class in high school, and have heard it used multiple times after, but when you can't have symmetry, a way to create balance is by having 3. That could be elements at 3 different heights, textures, locations, or colors, but having them clumped in sets of three. On the right side of the table, I used 2 vases that I had DIY-ed earlier this year and had the third shorter element of the wooden blocks and pine cones.
3. DIY, thrift, or forage if you can! The blocks on the right of the console look kinda like modern art. But -- they were simply some off cuts of wood I had lying around and some pine cones balanced on top from a tree in my neighborhood. The set up in the middle is made up of a rug (SORTSO from IKEA for $3.99), salt and pepper shaker rabbits, an old chocolate box, and some dried fir branches and eucalyptus. On the left, I poured some on sale mini ornaments from last year into a Dollar Tree Vase and hey, it looks pretty modern and minimalist to me!
4. Pick an accent color! I wanted this table to have a neutral color scheme, but the red boat is quite apparent. In order to tie it in to the cluster on the right, I added a single berry branch (from the craft store for less than $3) which really tied everything together.
5. Carry the same theme throughout the room! Holiday decor really comes in all shapes and colors, but having consistency atleast throughout the room makes it feel like a lot of thought went into interior design, when realistically, you were just following the boundaries set up for yourself. In this room, I continued these colors by using neutral and red accent pillows.
This works not only for a living room, but realistically any room in the house. I used the same general idea and made a centerpiece for our dining room as well using more dried leaves and surrounded a candle with them. Underneath we added a colorful table mat and red tablecloth to really tie it all in! It's simple and still gives a warm change of pace to the usual home decor and I absolutely love it!
