Combining two trending DIY ideas into one made these modern vases inspired by a YouTuber come to life and cost less than $4 each to make!

Usually I love spending hours walking around thrift stores, trying to find objects that I can creatively transform or walking around home decor stores getting inspired on new interior design ideas. What this last year and quarantine has taught me is that that luxury is no longer safe, and that I need to find ways to be creative without physically going to places. This also meant higher shipping costs online and me being inspired by designs outside of my budget.

Would you believe it if I told you each of those vases were hand made and made for under $4 each? They look modern enough to be sold somewhere like CB2! I got this idea from Drew from LoneFox's YouTube video (I haven't been able to find the original video but will link it as soon as I do) but switched the colors around to fit my aesthetic.

This DIY combines a current design trend and adds a twist. If you haven't yet heard of the DIY chalk paint trend, definitely check it out from other creators! All you need to make chalk paint is baking soda and acrylic or craft paint!

To make these vases you need:

  1. Tall cylinder glass vases ($1 at Dollar Tree) in 2 different heights

  2. Small wooden dowels (3 packets per vase from Dollar Tree)

  3. Hot glue sticks / glue gun

  4. Chalk paint in the color of your choice

How to:

The process is actually quite simple. Take the glass vase and begin gluing the dowel rods onto the bottom of the vase using hot glue. Be sure to hold the glue and rods tight so they bond well! Once the texture has made it around the vase, give the glue ample time to cure. Next, take your chalk paint and start painting the entire vase. Depending on how thick your paint is, you can really make it as textured as you want to make it look more and more like a ceramic piece! This project definitely takes about 3-4 coats to get the desired finish, so be sure to be patient!

Next time, I think I'd love to be more experimental with other materials that can be used to create texture under the chalk paint (stay tuned!). It's exciting though that glass objects can be made into looking like ceramic objects!
